Tucked into the foothills just outside of Boulder, The Greenbriar Inn was the perfect setting for S + M’s whimsical Colorado wedding. Their day was filled with colorful wildflowers, lush gardens, heartfelt moments and an afternoon rainstorm that made their sunset portraits even more romantic.
The entire wedding felt intimate and relaxed, with so many little details that complemented the natural surroundings of the venue.
The Greenbriar Inn is one of those Boulder wedding venues that feels completely different from the moment you arrive. Located in the countryside north of Boulder at the base of the Rocky Mountains, the property includes 20 acres of gardens, trees, ponds and mountain scenery.
For S + M’s wedding, the greenery surrounding the property paired perfectly with their colorful, wildflower inspired florals.
One of my favorite parts of photographing a Greenbriar Inn wedding is how much variety you can find without ever leaving the property. There are open foothill views, gardens filled with flowers, towering trees, water features and the historic inn itself.
Their ceremony took place at Greenbriar Falls, surrounded by trees with the pond, waterfall and large boulders behind them.
Greenbriar Falls is one of several ceremony options available at the venue and can accommodate up to 200 guests. The property also offers the Cabin Lawn and South Lawn for outdoor ceremonies, along with indoor options inside the inn.
The trees naturally frame the ceremony site, and the long stone pathway leading toward the arbor gives the entire space such a beautiful sense of place.
After the ceremony, everyone moved inside for dinner and the reception.
The warm wood, stone and historic character of the inn created a completely different atmosphere from the gardens outside. Instead of trying to transform the space, S + M carried little pieces of the garden indoors with delicate bud vases and wildflowers throughout the tables.
The Greenbriar Inn has been part of Boulder County for generations. The original building dates to 1873, while the property became The Greenbriar Inn in 1967. That history gives the reception spaces a warmth and character you don’t always find at newer Colorado wedding venues.
And then Colorado weather decided to make an appearance.
Rain started falling toward the end of the evening, but instead of letting it end our portrait time, S + M grabbed a clear umbrella and headed outside with me.
These ended up being some of my favorite photographs from their entire wedding.
The gardens looked completely different after the rain. Everything became deeper and greener, the flowers were saturated with color, and the warm lights from the inn started glowing behind them.
There is something incredibly romantic about rainy wedding photos, especially when you stop trying to fight the weather and use it as part of the story.
The clear umbrella, the garden, the wet pathways and the warm evening light gave the photographs a total storybook feeling.
For couples looking for a Boulder wedding venue with gardens, mountain scenery and plenty of character, The Greenbriar Inn offers a little bit of everything.
The venue sits just outside Boulder and offers multiple outdoor ceremony locations, indoor reception spaces and 20 acres of grounds for photographs. I especially love it for couples drawn to colorful florals, intimate garden weddings and celebrations that feel relaxed rather than overly formal.
And as a photographer, having so much variety in one location is a huge advantage. We can move from wildflower portraits to the ceremony by the water, intimate photographs beneath the trees and rainy evening portraits without spending part of the wedding day driving between locations.
